PS4 Sales Reach 6 Million as Sony Surpasses Fiscal Year Goal
The PlayStation 4's sales have surpassed six million units worldwide announced Sony.
"There have now been more than 3.6 million live broadcasts, and more than 56 million spectate sessions on PS4 through Twitch and Ustream," John Koller, vice president of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment said on the PlayStation blog. "In fact, since January 1st, PS4 gamers account for 20 percent of daily broadcasters on Twitch. PS4 owners are also embracing the Share button on the Dualshock 4 Wireless Controller, with more than 100 million shares captured as fans show friends their latest achievements on Facebook and Twitter."
Sony also announced around 90 percent of U.S. owners have their PS4 connected to the Internet.
The PlayStation 4 had sold an estimated 322K units in Japan over the two day period of its launch, and over a million units in its first 24 hours in North America.
The console launched on Feb. 22 in two versions, the standard console for 39,980 yen, and the more expensive console that came with the Eye camera peripheral for 43,980 yen, reported Polygon. Both versions came with Knack for free.
PlayStation 4's availability has gone down the last few weeks because of the overwhelming demand of the conference announced Sony.
"I can't work [the math] out precisely," said PlayStation UK executive Fergal Gara according to the Christian Post. "But based on what I've seen so far, I think it is going to be [hard to find a console] until around about April. You might get a fortnight or a week here or there where it is more available, but we should be back to free supply by about April... That's our best guess. It might be a little earlier than that, or it might be a little later But we'll get there."
It appears that Sony sold themselves short with the estimated number of consoles they were going to need come launch and the months immediately following.
The PlayStation 4 launched Nov. 15, and is currently $399.
