The Returned Series Premiere on Halloween: The Creepiest New Show on Television / This Zombie Drama is the Opposite of The Walking Dead [TRAILER]

The Returned is shaping up to be one of the most unique, creative, and scary shows on television this fall season. It is technically a zombie/undead show, but none of the zombies have rotting flesh and come bumbling after you until you kill them with a headshot.

The Returned is almost like the antithesis to The Walking Dead. Where The Walking Dead succeeds in being overly gory and intense, The Returned is more indirectly disturbing. Melissa Maerz from PopWatch.ew.com wrote, "Watching the drama unfold - slowly, moodily, over a goosebumpy soundtrack by Mogwai - you might find yourself waiting for some nightstalker to suddenly flip out and gorge himself on pancreas and spleen, just to stop everything from feeling so impossibly chic, so impeccably French. But The Returned strips away the usual conventions of the genre, which is exactly what makes it so deeply unsettling. What's left is an affecting meditation on grief."

The show starts with a Simon Birch-style school bus accident, where a bus careens into a river and several children die. Then the narrative flashes forward four years, where the kids start showing back up. One appears at bus stops, another shows up at her mother's house looking for dinner.

Maerz writes, "Deep down, this is a drama about nostalgia. Beautifully shot and darkly lit, in muted blues and greys, it looks more like a surreal memory than real life. Check out the lovely, street-light-illuminated make-out scene between two lesbians in leather catsuits, or the sad, beautiful shots of a rosy-lipped Camille puffing away on a cigarette. You can practically see the time fading before you, turning into the past, even though nobody's aging."
