Samsung Galaxy Note 7 News: Verizon Will Not Install Update That Will Kill Device

The recent news on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 pointed to an install update that will effectively kill the device.

Apparently, 93% of units in the US have so far been returned to the resellers and Samsung outlets, but there are still some devices that are with the owners. The assumption was that these do not exhibit any problems, which was why the owners kept them.

But the South Korean company shared the news about an update that will roll out on Dec. 19.

"This software update will prevent U.S. Galaxy Note7 devices from charging and will eliminate their ability to work as mobile devices," the company statement said. "Together with our carrier partners, we will be notifying consumers through multiple touchpoints to encourage any remaining Galaxy Note7 owners to participate in the program and to take advantage of the financial incentives available."

However, US carrier Verizon is not going to be a party to this digital slaughter.

In a statement, Verizon said that it's not going to participate in the update owing to the dangers posed to the users of Galaxy Note 7.

"We will not push a software upgrade that will eliminate the ability for the Note 7 to work as a mobile device in the heart of the holiday travel season," it said. "We do not want to make it impossible to contact family, first responders or medical professionals in an emergency situation."

Verizon said that it's been sharing the news and risks involving the Galaxy Note 7 devices to its clients, which is why it doesn't see the need to install the update.
