Samsung Gear S Release Date, Specs, Features: Stylish Smartwatch With More Than 1,000 Apps Launches October 2014
Samsung officially announced its latest wearable device - the Samsung Gear S on Aug. 28. The smartwatch, which was previously named Samsung Gear Solo, is scheduled to be introduced officially this October.
Announcing the Samsung Gear S, Samsung's IT & Mobile Communication CEO J.K. Shin said that his company is seeking to pioneer new approaches to expand the lineup of ready-to-wear devices.
He said, "The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication," adding, "It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime."
It is expected that the Samsung Gear S will support file sharing and voice calling in addition to improving connectivity among athletes as well as extreme sport enthusiasts who do not like carrying a phone around. It is possible to integrate the Nike + Running app as well as other workout, health, weather and news apps into the device.
Samsung has claimed that over 1,000 apps are available for, and can be used with the Gear S.
Meanwhile, a report by PC Advisor said that the upcoming smartwatch from Samsung will be powered by a 30-mAh Li-ion battery which will last as long as two days. In addition, the water-and dust-resistant device incorporates a heart-rate monitor and UV sensor. The smartwatch will have a 4 GB internal memory, 512 MB of RAM and a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor. It will also run on Samsung's Tizen operating system.
Moreover, it is expected that the Samsung Gear S will come with a barometer, compass, gyroscope and pedometer. As far as connectivity is concerned, the smartwatch will not require the use of a phone - it supports 2G, 3G and wireless connectivity together with GPS, USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 4.1
While it is known that the Samsung Gear S will come in a stylish rectangular design with a 2-inch Super AMOLED display, the company has also developed a curved model.
