Samsung Gear VR News Update: Next-Gen Devices Already In the Mind of Samsung
Samsung is already looking towards the next generation of its Gear VR after a successful launch of the company's first foray into virtual reality technology, according to the latest news reports.
Samsung president Young Sohn, per Android Authority, said that they are trying to glean some lessons in the first-gen Gear VR by improving some technical capabilities of the gadget. They are looking at improving battery efficiency, for example, as well as the latency and especially the display.
Right now, the 2560x1440p resolution is sufficient for the smart phone but he said that users still have to contend with the "screen door" effect, he said. To address this, he said, the pixel densities of the next generation of Gear VR should double the current models. That should be good news for Galaxy owners in the future.
Whether that would impact on the price is not clear. One of the advantages of Samsung Gear VR, apart from being wireless, is that it's cheap. Boosting the display capabilities of the next generation devices he said would need from $5-10 billion investment.
Sohn also said that they would need to study first if it's viable to build a Samsung Gear VR that is independent of the smart phone.
In related news, Occipital is building competition for the Gear VR as it is releasing the VR Dev Kit designed specifically for the iPhone. However, the price could be a major issue considering that it costs about $500 for both the structure sensor and bridge engine. For now, however, its target market is still the developers.
