Seattle Seahawks' Derrick Coleman Responds to Deaf 9-Year-Old Fan's Letter, 'Even Though We Wear Hearing Aids, We Can Still Accomplish our Goals & Dreams!'
Before Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman prepares to face Peyton Manning's Denver Broncos at the Super Bowl this Sunday, he traded letters with a nine-year-old fan who is also hearing impaired.
Coleman has been deaf since he was three-years-old. He is the first deaf offensive player in NFL history.
Identical twin sisters Riley and Erin Kovalcik were both inspired when they discovered Derrick Coleman's story of courage due to the fact that Riley and her sister are also deaf.
As a result, Riley decided to write a note to her hero football player to inspire him as the Seahawks come to her home state of New Jersey to play in the Super Bowl.
The twins' patriarch aided his daughters by tweeting a photo of Riley's message to Coleman. As a result, Riley's letter rapidly went viral. The following are the actual words that Riley Kovalcik sent to her NFC Champion hero (all original text included):
"Dear, my insperation Derrick Coleman
I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best. I have faif in you Derrick good Job on January 20th game. Go seattle seahawks! here are things we have in comen.
I where two hearing aids. I love sports.
other things are I'm a identcal twin and my twin where's one hearing aid too!"
After receiving little Miss Riley Kovalcik's letter, Coleman replied to his young fan and wrote the following letter back.
"Dear Miss Kovalcik,
Thanks for the letter. Really was great hearing from a friend who I have so much in common with. I [appreciate] you rooting for the Seahawks and me and hope you continue to do so when we play in the Superbowl!!!
I want you to know that I always try my best in everything I do and have faith in you & your twin sister too. Even though we wear hearing aids, we can still accomplish our goals & dreams! If you or your family [are] ever in Seattle, I hope we can all get together & play some sports or games!
Take care
Derrick L. Coleman Jr"
In a previous interview with Fox Sports, Coleman revealed what inspired him to persevere.
"That's just the way I approach my life," said Coleman to FOX Sports. "Every day I wake up and I get a chance. I always say that God blessed me this morning and I can do what I do. Our time in this world is very limited. It can be gone now or it can be gone later so I take advantage of every opportunity I have whether it's playing football, working or whatever. I'm just a happy guy."
Super Bowl XLVIII will be played This Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and will air on Fox.
