Slain NYC Officer's Christian Faith Lives On: New Yorkers Worship & Family Forgives During Candle Light Vigil [VIDEO]

Rafael Ramos

Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were both remembered during emotional candle light vigils held Sunday evening where hundreds sung worship songs on the streets in Brooklyn and the Ramos family expressed their forgiveness.

All of the country was impacted by the news of the vicious murders of Ramos and Liu. A deranged man who believed he was avenging Eric Garner, targeted the two as they sat in their patrol car simply because they were police officers. Ramos was a member of the well-known NYC Christian church Christ Tabernacle, and Sunday night his faith shined through as people gathered in Brooklyn with candles and sung "Go Tell it on the Mountain" and "This Little Light of mine." Candles, flowers and an American flag were placed as part of a makeshift memorial, and bunting has been hung in honor of the officers at the 84th Precinct, where they worked.

In a similar fashion the family of Ramos spoke to reporters outside of the home where the officer grew up and where his mother still lives. Mourners gathered outside the home for a candle light vigil as well.

"We don't blame him. We forgive him. The Ramos family forgives him because God forgave us," Richard Gonzales, Ramos' first cousin, told 1010 WINS, "And I know if Rafael was here and it was the opposite, he would say the same words - he forgave him."

During the 1 p.m. service at Christ Tabernacle on Sunday, senior pastor Michael Durso expressed that he was at the hospital Saturday night in support of Ramos."We gotta do everything to help them," he told his congregation according to a church attendee.

The pastor explained that during his emotional visit a female chaplain at the hospital sung, "Amazing Grace."

"It was amazing . . . it was still pain in the room and grief in the room, but that song just helped us go to the next step," Durso said reportedly said.
