"The Sound of Music Live" Starring Carrie Underwood. NBC Reveals More Cast and Releases Promo Poster.

American Idol Vet and country singer, Carrie Underwood will be starring in The Sound of Music Live. "The Sound of Music" is based on the original 3-hour Broadway production created in 1959. Co-stars in the musical will be Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti, and Christian Borle.

Underwood will be playing Maria von Trapp, McDonald will be playing Mother Abbess, Borle will be playing the family friend Max Detweiler, and Bananti will be playing the Captain's fiancée, Elsa Schrader.

The musical will premiere live on NBC December 5 at 8 pm. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
