'Star Trek 3' Movie Release Date, Latest News: Filming to Commence in South Korea
Even as Paramount Pictures and director Bob Orci are gearing up for the yet to be titled 'Star Trek 3' film, fansite TrekMovie has reported that it seems that the production team of the upcoming movie has found the site for their maiden location shoot in Seoul, the beautiful capital city of South Korea.
In fact, Seoul mayor Park Won-soon recently visited Los Angles with a view to promote his city as a prime location for big budget Hollywood productions. Later, the mayor announced on his Facebook page, "Today I met with Jeffrey Chernov, producer of 'Star Trek 3', at the Paramount Pictures Studio and agreed to film a portion of the upcoming movie in Seoul."
Soon after this announcement, the 'Star Trek 3' director Bob Orci, who no stranger to fan sites, coyly commented on the TrekMovie messageboards, "The Mayor was a lovely man :)"
Since Paramount has yet to make an official announcement in this regard, the post on TrekMovie may be considered a rumor. However, it is not too early to speculate on what filming in the region might entail. If it is a non-Earth location, as TrekMovie suggests, could Seoul be a double for a world inhabited by Romulans, Klingons or possibly a new alien planet where no man has gone before?
Incidentally, actor John Cho, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu in the previous two 'Star Trek' films, was born in Seoul, but that does not necessarily indicate a Sulu-specific plot element.
Other major films that have shot in Seoul recently include 'The Bourne Legacy' and 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'. Both these films received sufficient tax breaks and citywide cooperation, including the closing of streets and even whole districts.
Meanwhile, another report says that although the release date of 'Star Trek 3' has yet to be confirmed, it is currently slated for a 2016 release.
Christian Post says, "It is still unclear if the production crew has already started filming yet but it is likely they will be in 2015. Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in the film, is currently busy preparing for shooting the Avatar sequel, so it is quite possible that filming the third 'Star Trek' title will happen in 2015."
