'Star Trek Discovery' Cast News: 'The Walking Dead' Actress Sonequa Martin-Green Lands Main Role

Actress Sonequa Martin-Green of "The Walking Dead" has landed the lead role of Rainsford in the upcoming CBS All Access series, "Star Trek: Discovery."

Although CBS TV Studios has not yet commented on the casting news, sources confirm that the actress will continue to be one of the series regulars of "The Walking Dead," where she portrays the role of Sasha Williams. However, since reports about her new gig in the "Star Trek" series started to surface, some fans have expressed their worries about the possible fate of her character in the hit zombie apocalypse drama, where any character could get killed at any given moment.

In the upcoming series, Martin-Green will play Lt. Cmdr. Rainsford, who is described as a sensitive character. In his interview last August, series co-creator and former showrunner Bryan Fuller described her character as a "lieutenant commander with caveats." Back then, Fuller revealed that they were in search of a non-white actress for the role.

Joining Martin-Green in the "Star Trek: Discovery" cast are previously announced cast members Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer; Anthony Rapp as an astromycologist, fungus expert and Starfleet Science Officer named Lt. Stamets; Michele Yeoh as Starfleet Captain Georgiou; and Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo as the Klingons.

In May, "Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere on CBS. After its premiere, it will relocate to CBS All Access. Produced by CBS Television Studios, the series is set to feature a new ship, as well as new characters and new missions.
