'Star Wars Episode 7' Movie Cast Update: Adam Driver to Play Darth Vader-Like Role

Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman are allegedly up for the same role in the newest "Star Wars" film.

Director JJ Abrams has spoken to both British stars for the same unrevealed role, according to MarketSaw.

Oldman formerly confirmed that he had spoken to the Star Wars team but he did not reveal what character he would possibly play.

"They've called. I'm more cynical about it now. I'll believe it when I'm on the plane home. The deal isn't done, but yeah, they've inquired," said Oldman to Sky Movies.

Oldman also joked that it would be the newest franchise he would be associated with.

"I mean Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter, Batman and Star Wars - bloody hell," said the Dark Knight Rises actor.

In addition, Cumberbatch has previously jested that he has tested for a role on Star Wars Episode 7...as a lightsaber.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" actor described on Conan O'Brien's late night show that he had been leaving director JJ Abrams messages on his cell phone.

"I heard that you very much would like to be in Star Wars and you're lobbying JJ. Is that true?" asked O'Brien to Cumberbatch in the interview.

The "12 Years as a Slave" star responded with the following statement.

"Yeah, it started with me with sort of...I just sort of would leave casual messages on his phone as a lightsaber."

In other "Star Wars Episode 7" casting news, the latest installment in the iconic sci-fi movie franchise may have just discovered its main villain. Girls' star Adam Driver is allegedly days away from agreeing to play a Darth Vader-like character in JJ Abrams' sequel, according to various reports.

"Exact details are unknown, but the character is said to be in the vein of iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader," according to Variety.

"Girls" co-star Lena Dunham congratulated Driver regarding the news on Twitter on Wednesday.

"We're VERY proud of Adam Driver re: Star Wars. He's about to rip a hole in da force. Is that a thing? I guess I should see those movies," wrote Dunham via Twitter yesterday.

"Star Wars Episode 7" is set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2015.
