Steven Curtis Chapman Feels the Pressure of Staying 'Relevant' in the Music Industry After Losing His daughter
Steven Curtis Chapman opened up about feeling the pressure of staying 'Relevant' with his latest album in a recent interview.
It has been six years since we have heard a studio album from longtime prominent Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman. After the death of his youngest daughter Maria he focused on healing and making music to heal. He released Beauty Will Rise in 09' and since then a deep roots album distributed by Cracker Barrel, and Christmas album but a studio album was way overdue.
His 2013 album, The Glorious Unfolding, was long separated from his prior studio record. For long-lasting artist Chapman, staying current and maintaining identity is key to a successful record.
Chapman chatted with JesusFreakHideout.com in a recent interview and described his recording process for the latest record.
"It's not me putting on skinny jeans--they wouldn't fit anyway probably. But, for the last ten years, it's been a bit of a challenge to say 'How do I make sure I'm staying as relevant with my music and my sound and all that, and yet not going 'OK, where'd Steven Curtis Chapman go in the midst of that?' Y'know?" he said.
The 58 time gospel Dove Award winner spoke of some of the inspiration behind his latest record, "There's stuff going on in music that I'm like 'Ahh, yeah, I like that!' When I hear it, I kinda turn up the radio and go, 'That sounds cool!' What parts of that can I incorporate into the music I make that would feel natural?" he explained.
When describing his creative process he thought combining rhythms, hand claps, and foot stomps made his sound current.
"it feels right, it feels sort of corporate; it's got a corporate element where everybody's clapping along and the foot stomps and there's something real purposeful about it, like I'm making this declaration and marching forward with this, which seemed to be right for the whole theme of this glorious unfolding. We're moving forward and God's carrying us forward," he continued.
In 2008, his youngest daughter Maria, was tragically killed in a horrific accident while her older brother was pulling into the driveway and hit her with his SUV. His 2009 album Beauty will Rise was based on the singer's recovery from that experience. Looking to stay relevant or appease music industry standards was not his focus then.
When complemented for that honest album Chapman described his family's feelings six years later on the occurrence "by His grace, we're healing, we're still carrying this, it's redefined us, it's not like we'll ever get over it, we've been changed forever by it. But what does that look like five years down the road and what can I communicate now that I could not have said five, six, seven years ago?"
Chapman said he was intimidated by the thought of really needing to deliver his newest record because "there's no way you're going to please everyone."
The Glorious Unfolding was the No. 27 most sold album in the in United States according to the Billboard 200, and it was the No. 1 Top Christian Album sold the same week. In addition, it was the No. 20 Top Digital Album sold that week.
