'Stranger Things' Season 2 Cast: 'Lord of The Rings' Actor Sean Astin Joining The Cast?

New faces are set to join the cast of "Stranger Things" when it returns for its second season, and they include stars of the 90's sitcom "Mad About You" and the popular film "Lord of the Rings."

According to reports, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser and Linnea Berthelsen will be on the cast of "Stranger Things" season 2.

Now that new updates on its cast have just been released, the shape of the sophomore season of Netflix's popular horror thriller has already become a little clearer.

Next season, Sean Astin will play Bob Newby, who is described as a kind former nerd who previously went to the same high school as Joyce Byers and Sheriff Hopper. In the upcoming series, Bob now manages the Hawkins Radioshack.

Some fans of the show believe that Sean Astin's bona fides and stardom in "The Lord of the Rings" is a perfect fit for the "Stranger Things" aesthetic.

Paul Reiser will play the role of Dr. Owens, a Department of Energy muck who is assigned to contain the events of the previous year, when a killer from a different realm came through to our world and kidnapped young Will Byers.

On top of his upcoming role in the series, Reiser also currently appears on Amazon's "Red Oaks." He is also set to debut an eight-episode scripted series at "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" on Seeso in 2017.

Meanwhile, Berthelsen will play an emotionally wounded young woman named Roman, who suffered a huge loss when she was a kid. While she is not a Hawkins resident, she has connections with all the spooky things that took place at the Energy Department in the previous season.

"Stranger Things" season 2 is set to return in 2017.
