'Supergirl' Cast News: Melissa Benoist Surprises Fans at Sneak Peek Screening
Actress Melissa Benoist recently experienced the impact her upcoming 'Supergirl' show has on her young female fans first hand, and spoke about it with People Magazine.
"I was beside myself," Benoist says. "There was an electric energy in the air that day. It was pure excitement."
The former 'Glee' star surprised over 400 of her young fans along with their mothers at a sneak peek screening of the show's pilot last month.
She spoke on being overwhelmed by the positive response and not fully actualizing the huge influence her role on this show has.
"In some ways it has hit me, and in other ways it hasn't," she stated. "I am fully aware of how much Supergirl means to her fans and how much she has the ability to affect people for the better, but I'm not sure I am quite aware of how large that circle of affectation is - and I might not be until the show begins to air in the fall."
While her fan base has largely been defined by teenage girls, Benoist has been vocal about wanting the show to encompass all sexes.
"I want to do right," she said in a previous interview with EW. "Of course this is a broad statement, but I want to do right by women. I want to portray someone they can relate to and look up to that's not a trite or a shallow depiction. I want her to be complicated and flawed. I guess I just want all women to feel like they could be Kara and Superwoman as well. I don't want it to be campy. I want it to be grounded and human. That goes for anybody. It doesn't matter what sex. It doesn't matter if it's women or men I inspire, I just want to inspire people in general to realize their strengths and their potential, and that you can do the things that you feel like are impossible to accomplish."
'Supergirl' premieres Monday, October 26.
