Tenth Ave North Singer Mike Donehey Explains Meaning of 'Cathedrals' Album, 'Everywhere I Go I Make it Sacred' [INTERVIEW]
Tenth Avenue North reached the No. 1 spot with their highly-anticipated fourth studio project, Cathedrals on both iTunes and Billboard's Top Christian Albums Charts. BREATHEcast caught up with the band's frontman Mike Donehey about the album and the insightful meaning behind it.
The band Tenth Ave North is taking their music and ministry to a whole other level with their latest album and Donehey said his goal is to get people to realize God is wherever they are. "I'm most excited about hopefully helping people understand that to know Jesus it doesn't mean you have to go live in a mud hut in Kenya and be a missionary," he said, "it may mean that for some people but there's a line in the last song of the whole record 'All The Earth is Holy Ground' where I say 'I don't believe in secular things, just a world waiting to be redeemed, because all the earth is holy ground'."
The singer believes Christians tend to separate themselves from society so much and that creates a stigma. "Sometimes I feel like we've turned following Jesus into warring against culture," he stated, "I just don't see that, I see Jesus coming down and serving the culture and laying his life down for the culture. In doing that changing the hearts of the culture and having them fall in love with him."
Donehey maintains that he stands on what he reads in the Bible. "I am a cathedral of God's spirit, we've been told in Acts 17, we've been told in 2 Corinthians 6, we've been told in Colossians and Hebrews that we are a living temple of God's spirit right?," he asked and then explained his reasoning, "Now I'm not afraid of this big bad secular world. In fact now I know if the spirit of God lives in me, everywhere I go I make it sacred, just when I walk though the door."
The Nebraska native says, so instead of walking out into the world and being scared of anything he is "gonna walk around and bring the kingdom of God every where" he goes.
When asked what prompted his new found revelation Donehey said he was inspired by scripture, reading books, and talking to guys that he calls "much smarter then he is." The singer mentioned New York pastor Tim Keller, Switchfoot front man Jon Foreman, rapper Lecrae, and credited the conversations that he had with them.
"Acts 17 says God's spirit no longer dwells in buildings made by men, buildings are great," he explained, "It's a great place to meet they can even help evoke worship but in essence that's one of the biggest confusions in church is realizing the veil has been torn. His spirit has gone out and he lives in us, we are bringing the kingdom of God, we are his dwelling place."
This profound thought inspired the whole of Tenth Ave North's new album Cathedrals. "I love the word cathedral," he went on to say, "Back in the medieval times you'd have people coming in crying out 'sanctuary'. They could be on the run, they could be being chased by the law, maybe some bounty hunters are after them or whatever but they could come into a cathedral and yell out 'sanctuary' and they could find a hiding place there."
"Isn't that what we're called to be not only with God," he continued, "We're called to be a sanctuary of his spirit but we're also meant to be a safe place for sinners."
"Sadly I don't know if the American church would be labeled a safe place for sinners" he added.
The band's first single, "No Man Is An Island," has maintained momentum at Christian radio, climbing into the Top 10 on the National Audience, AC Monitored and CHR charts. The song was inspired by a poem written by John Donne and Donehey shared his theology behind the powerful song.
"We believe God is a trinity, God is a community, and we are made in his image," he noted, "So we were made to be in community with one another. First of all that's beautiful because I know a lot of people that beat themselves up because they're lonely. If you're feeling lonely then that's because you were made in the image of God. That's why you feel like that, don't beat yourself up."
Cathedrals can be purchased on iTunes HERE. The group is currently on its national Cathedrals headline tour circuit wrapping it up December 5, 2014. Stay tuned for part 2 of our interview with Donehey and visit tenthavenuenorth.com for more tour dates and information.
