'The Bible' Miniseries on History Channel: Why Is The Show So Popular?

History Channel's epic new miniseries The Bible is one of the most watched shows in television history. Posting 14 million viewers after its first episode and over 70 million for the first 4 episodes together (including encore presentation on History and Lifetime) The Bible success confounds Hollywood's biggest decision-makers. But why is the Mark Burnett and Roma Downey series so popular? Jonathan Brock at Grace Hill Media offers his own explanation for The Bible's diving impact on viewers.

1. The Bible is popular because it's gossip free. Instead of riding the conspiracy hype of stories like The Davinci Code, The Bible doesn't try to speculate. Instead of asking questions like, "Is Jesus Gay," or "Did Jesus have an affair with Mary Magdalen," The Bible has no agenda other than visualizing iconic stories from the sacred book.

2. The Bible unites people.Mark Burnett and Roma Downey enlisted the help of over 40 scholars and theologians to ensure biblical accuracy. Instead of dividing factions of Christians, the shows remain neutral in content, which allows the show to appeal to Christians from different denominations.

3. Not only are the stories inspiring, but The Bible provides a well-designed narrative arc of how God deals with humanity. Based on the millions of viewers who have tuned in to the first five episodes, it's obvious American still seeks spiritualism. The Bible provides a comprehensive tour through stories that a lot of viewers know relatively nothing about. Personally, The Bible has encouraged me to finish reading the actual book. The show made me realize I know relatively little about the most widely read text of all time.

Tune in Easter Sunday for The Bible miniseries finale at 8/7c on History Channel.
