Promos for "The Blacklist" season 4, episode 2 saw the reunion between Liz and Tom, and baby Agness being led to safety.

Throughout the episode, Mr. Kaplan's death was hinted at, as she and Red exchanged succinct words about her plan to fake the death of Liz.

"I'm not sorry for what I did. I betrayed you to keep Elizabeth safe. Just like you asked me to all those years ago, when you first put her in my arms as a baby girl," she said.

However, her attempts to justify her actions seemed not to have any effect on Red. Towards the end of the episode, as Liz had been successfully rescued from the hands of Alexander Kirk, Red took Mr. Kaplan to a far-fetched acre of land he had acquired years ago and there shot her to death.

"You presumed to decide what was best for me," Red told Mr. Kaplan, who was his friend once. "Even if I resolved the anger, the pain you caused, I can't trust you, ever. I'm standing before a stranger," he added, before finally gunning her down.

After killing her with a bullet to the head, Red walked away and left Mr. Kaplan lying in the middle of the woods. However, the final frame of the hour lingered on her hand, which suddenly grasped a patch of grass, hinting that she might have actually survived the gunshot.

While it is possible that Mr. Kaplan is alive, "The Blacklist" creator Jon Blonkemkamp recently revealed that season 4 would not be kind to her, especially after Red had discovered her betrayal.
