The Ongoing Concept's Dawson Scholz Reveals What Next Music Video May Be; Talks Deadlines & Fighting with His Brothers [INTERVIEW 2]
BREATHEcast spoke to The Ongoing Concept's vocalist/guitarist Dawson Scholz and he shared some insight about the way the band writes, what music video is coming next, and getting into fights with his brothers. (Read part one here.)
The Ongoing Concept extended their Handmade theme past using their own instruments and even built everything for their music video for "Unwanted." The guys built their set and even filmed it themselves. This works out to be a pretty cool feature as you see each member taking turns in holding the camera as they are seen through the reflection of a mirror.
Currently the band is trying to figure out a way to out-do "Unwanted." The main restrictions right now are budget and the touring schedule. Dawson said the self-filming will probably not return this time around, but he does have a song in mind for the next video.
"Melody is the song I'm thinking about right. That's the one I think we can top 'Unwanted' with if I do the music video correctly in my head," he revealed. He said fans might not expect the much tamer song, but he has a plan.
In the "Unwanted" music video you see the vocal duo of Dawson and Kyle going back and forth. Both of them take turns screaming at different points, and if one's not watching the video, it may be difficult to figure out who is singing what.
Dawson said his voice is much higher pitched than Kyle's and he does a lot of different pitches in his screams while Kyle's voice is deeper and more brutal. Dawson also does 95 percent of the clean singing on the album, although he admits his brother could sing if he wanted to.
"'Prisoner' has the best representation of the tambour of our voices being different. We go back and forth a lot on that," said the vocalist.
According to various interviews, it has been stated that Handmade suffered a number of push backs because the band felt the album was not ready. However, from out of those delays, Dawson feels the band created some of their better material.
"Feel" was written and recorded a week before the album had to be done. They finished the album on May 10, and was written right around the deadline. Other ones that were brought down to the wire were "Survivor," the end of "Falling," and "Melody." "Unwanted" was the first song written in late 2013, early 2014.
"I wrote 'Melody' because I was having such a hard time writing. It was the lowest point of me creating music. That song came out of me not caring anymore. 'You know what, I'm gonna write a random song and use this ukulele. I don't even care anymore'. I think that is one of our strongest songs, and it came out of a time where we had no ideas left," shared Scholz.
The band has an interesting way of writing songs as well, moving from track to track without every finishing one in a straight shot. They write a bit scattered and come up with different sections of songs and then move on to another until they can figure out what they want to do with previous stuff.
Perhaps it is this "scattered" writing that helps their music stand out. There are many moving parts and intricate details in their songs that make them stick out like a sore thumb in the best way possible.
"I just feel like we write music that we like to listen to. We aren't afraid to try new things..." he revealed. "We are always searching for something timeless, something that you can remember for years to come and not just listen to a record 10 years from now and not just go, 'Oh yeah, that was that trendy thing back in 2015 where all the bands were doing this at that time'. "
He said you can sort of tell what year of music it is, especially in rock because a lot of bands are following the same fade, "I don't want to be that band."
"You look at bands like Underoath and Bring Me to the Horizon. They have albums that came out like 10 years ago and they are still being listened to now. People listen to them and say, 'Holy cow this is awesome'. That's because I feel like they broke away from any trends that are happening like specialty ways of writing music." He cites 2007 as an example of something a lot of bands in their genre were doing - the pause, small clang of a bell, and then a breakdown.
"There are certain bands that never did any of that. That music was heavy, it didn't have a trend, it's like their album, their band. You listen to that album now and you still think it's amazing. That's what I want to be...that's what I want to achieve." (For more on what kind of music influences The Ongoing Concept, check back with BREATHEcast tomorrow.)
Lastly, the dynamic of the band is literally a family affair. Dawson, Parker, and Kyle are all brothers and TJ is basically their brother. Sometimes this brotherhood is rewarding and other times it gets intense.
Dawson admitted being brothers in a band makes it harder because they fight a lot. "We all have bold personalities, we all think differently and that clashes a lot...I think we work well together because we are brothers and when we fight it doesn't ruin things as much."
In another band a big fight between members may linger on like a "small wound slowly building." This could cause tension, band members to leave, or even be kicked out. That is not the case with The Ongoing Concept.
"My ideas are often the complete opposite of what Kyle's has a vision for so we are constantly butting heads and have to compromise a lot," said Dawson. "I hate that because I wish I could have someone that just agrees with me with everything I want to do and not have someone to always contradict. But I think at the same time it also helps because it makes me have to change my focus and think about it a different way."
During writing Kyle may tell Dawson that he doesn't like how a part is written which initially will anger him. They will fight about it, and then a few hours later when Dawson rewrites it, he realizes because of that push he came up with something much better.
"Our wounds heal faster that way," he said with a chuckle.

The Ongoing Concept just announced they will be heading out with Norma Jean for the 'O' God the Aftermath' full U.S. 10 year anniversary tour. Dawson said there will be another guest announced in the next few weeks as well, but to just stick tight for now.
