'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 Release Date News & Spoilers: Is Sybil The Siren The Only Big Bad of Season?

The premiere episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 revealed the new big bad of the season. A siren who takes control of Damon and Enzo, Sybil, played by Nathalie Kelley, has some deep roots in mythology.

The end of the season premiere featured Sybil's song, which she would use in the series to lure men. In mythology, a man falls under the control of a siren when he listens to her song.

Myths involving sirens also have different depictions of the mythological character. Some myths depict sirens as part bird since they have bird feet, feathers and wings. In the series, however, Sybil's human body appears pretty standard and does not have any bird-like feature. Fans have yet to see if she has bird-like talents to offer at some point in the future.

It looks like "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 relies heavily on "Odyssey," where its author, Homer, notes that there are two sirens. While that remains to be seen, fans can assume that Sybil is not the only siren this season based on Damon and Enzo's conversation in the previous episode.

In one of the scenes in episode 1, Damon told Enzo, "If you care for nothing, they can see nothing," hinting that there is at least one more siren out there other than Sybil.

The premiere episode also revealed that Sybil will take control of men like minions before killing them. However, Enzo found an easy way to resist the siren, which is by plugging the ears with wax and tying up an affected man until he finally get out of the siren's range.

Fans of the series will know how good Sybil will be in manipulating vampires this season. "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 airs every Friday, 8:00 P.M. on The CW.
