TobyMac Embraces Unconventional Approach to Christian Music, ‘I think I Define Worship More Loosely than Most Do’
TobyMac States He Embraces His Unconventional Approach to Christian Music in A New Interview 'I think I define worship more loosely than most do'
Toby McKeehan also known as TobyMac recently caught up with seattleweekly.com to explain his progressive style in Christian music along with his welcoming stance on mainstream entertainment.
TobyMac was one of the first musicians to introduce Christian rapping to the world on a large scale. He has gone on to be one of the most successful artist in Christian music overall.
First presented to the world as a member of the vocal trio DC Talk, in which he was a part of for 13 years, he after went on to pursue a solo career and has been extremely successful. Between Mac and dc Talk, he's sold over 10 million albums and topped the Billboard 200 with the 2012 album "Eye On It," making him the genre's first act in 15 years to attain that chart achievement.
Mac has embraced all different styles of music on his records rock, hip-hop, rap, pop, funk, and R&B. His most recent album, 2012's Eye on It is heavily dance music focused.
"[I grew] up listening to Run DMC, Bob Marley, The Police, Hall & Oates," Mac says to seattleweekly.com. "I've never felt like any of it was out of bounds. I've always felt like I've had a passport into all these styles."
Mac although a successful pioneer in Christian music, he has also been heavily criticized in Contemporary Christian Music market for having music appear in the "secular" media.
"I want my music to go everywhere it can," says McKeehan, not objecting to any form of media whether it's an R-rated movie or Video game or anything. "I believe in what's in my songs, so I want it to be there."
Co-founder of Gotee Records Mac, has had music featured in action films, video games, and in ads for the NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, NASCAR, MLB, and more.
The risky performer concludes his interview by stating, "I think I define worship more loosely than most do," he says. "I don't think it has to be U2/Coldplay chords and a lyric that sounds like it came from the Psalms. Worship is broader than that."
In a past interview with Christian Post Mac praises Rapper Lecrae and his team for going against the grain and not being afraid to approach Christian music "not two stepping this thing or half stepping, they are not treading lightly on this Jesus thing."
"I think there are so many artists out there who are expressing their faith through hip-hop and their beliefs through hip-hop, and I find more and more mainstream artists talk about their love for God through hip-hop. But then there's a movement that's happening with Lecrae and those guys that are making people just stop and notice," he said regarding the new movement of mainstream Christian hip-hop.
TobyMac and the Diverse City band are currently on the Hits Deep Tour. The second leg of the tour kicks off this spring along with Brandon Heath, Matt Maher, Mandisa, Matthew West and Capital Kings.
