Tony Dungy Interested in Coaching the Detroit Lions? 'That's the Job I Would Want' He Says

If Tony Dungy desires to return to coaching, there is one job in the NFL that he would be interested in, the Detroit Lions.

"I will tell you this, I think the best job out there is the Detroit Lions," said Dungy on The Dan Patrick Show Friday morning adding, "That's the job I would want."

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans have recently employed coaches, but openings persist with the Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, and Detroit Lions after the firing of Lion's former Head Coach Jim Schwartz who managed the team the past five seasons.

"I think they're closest to the Super Bowl," said the Former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach to Dan Patrick. "You look for a franchise quarterback in this day and age, you want to have a passing game because this game is all about passing, and you want people who can rush the passer and protect the lead."

Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford was third behind Peyton Manning and Drew Brees in the NFL in total passing yards and in yards per game this season. However, he was inconsistent sometimes and the Lions ended the 2013 season at 7-9.

"You throw in two really good tight ends, a couple running backs who can make things happen," Dungy continued. "They've got everything they need."

Dungy also enjoyed what he saw in the NFC North this year, where the division champion won eight games. Then Dungy discusses the issue of intrusive owners.

"And you've got an owner who doesn't meddle. He's not going to come in and tell you, 'Play this guy, cut this guy, draft this guy.' It's a perfect situation. If I was ever coming back, it would be for that job."
