Virgin Media and Netflix Strike Deal / Pays Over 300 Million for Hit Shows "House of Cards" and "Breaking Bad"
Virgin Media Pays Netflix Over $300 Million to Air Shows Via an App on TiVo Set Up Box
Looks like Virgin Media wants a piece of Netflix money pie.
Virgin Media just agreed to terms on a deal with Netflix that will give them the rights to air popular shows like House of Cards and Breaking Bad on its TV services. Virgin Media is the first company in the U.K. to solicit Netflix's programming.
Now that the $300-plus million deal is sealed, Virgin Media subscribers can access the streaming service via an app on Virgin Media's TiVo set-up box.
Virgin Media is planning a test boot of the Netflix app to 40,000 homes this week. Out of Virgin's 4 million TV subscribers, Netflix will have access to 1.7 million new users.
Virgin Media's COO, Dana Strong, believes the netflix partnership will benefit both companies.
"Netflix is a fabulous addition to Virgin Media TiVo, enabling our customers to enjoy even more of their favourite shows and movies simply and easily, all through their TV set-top box and at outstanding value," she said.
