Wentworth Miller Openly Gay: Russia's New Anti-Gay Law Inspiring Several People To Come Out!
Russian President Vladimir Putin's new "Anti-gay" laws, this criminalizes public expression of support for non-traditional relationships. With many opposed to the idea, both outside the country and within its own population the law has been causing uproar. Prison Break star Wentworth Miller has recently came out as a gay American man in his recent decline to be a guest at the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. Miller wrote in a letter:
"I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," he wrote. "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."
Miller's decline of the Russian event will probably encourage more to decline other invitations from Russia, especially with Russia hosting next year's Winter Olympics. The law was signed into law last month by President Putin and was originally titled the law on "homosexual propaganda". Individuals face up to $3000.00 for breaking the law and organizations can face up to a $30,000 fine. Foreign citizens can face fines up to $3000, deportation, denial of re-entry into the country, and up to 15 days in prison If the law is broken.
