Windows 10 Virtual Touchpad Latest News: Is It The End Of The Computer Mouse?

The Windows 10 virtual touchpad has been unveiled, which some pundits think might be the death knell of the mouse.

Windows Insider Build 14965 is giving a tease of the new virtual touchpad, which Microsoft claims makes it easier to control external monitors from tablets without the need of a mouse.

"The virtual touchpad lets you do more with a tablet and a second screen - just connect to another monitor, PC, or TV, go to Action Center and tap on the 'Project' Quick Action to extend your screen,"

Dona Sarkar, software engineer at Windows Devices, wrote in a blog. "Use it just like you would a physical touchpad to control content on the connected screen. To enable it, press and hold on the taskbar and select 'Show touchpad button.'"

When you do that, a touchpad icon will appear in the notification area and when you click on it, the Windows 10 virtual touchpad will be triggered.

The Verge said the Windows 10 virtual touchpad would be welcome news by those who own tablets who are not using either a trackpad or keyboard. This will also be relevant to people who typically link up their tablets to a second display.

But it doesn't really apply to anybody so equating the virtual keyboard as the start of the end of the mouse is premature.

There are other updates on the Build 14965 such as the Sticky Notes, Windows Ink Workspace Improvements, Address Bar in Registry Editor, and Hyper-V VM experience.
