Xiaomi Mi Box Release Date: Streaming Device Will Establish Presence In USA

Xiaomi couldn't seem to get a foothold on the US market in terms of its smart phones. Now the Chinese company is thinking that the Xiaomi Mi Box might just be the gadget that will do the trick.

"This is what begins to really help us establish a brand presence here in the U.S.," Xiaomi international chief Hugo Barra said.

The Xiaomi Mi Box, which is built on the Android TV, retails for $69 and already gives owners access to ESPN, Showtime, Netflix, Sling and HBO.

The specs for the gadget are as follows:

- 2GB of RAM

- 2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor

- 750MHz Mail 450 GPU

- 8GB onboard flash storage, which is expandable

- 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with dual-band support for 2.4 and 5GHz wireless connectivity

- Bluetooth 4.0

- Single HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2 support

The Xiaomi Mi Box runs Android TV 6.0 and is touted to stream 4K at 60fps. When the software is updated to the Android Nougat, the gadget will be able to support HDR10 standard.

The Chinese company's sales for its smart phones in the Chinese market have declined while it sees the rise of the competition like Oppo and Huawei. But other Asian markets like Indonesia and India are considered by the company as emerging. However, its strategy to sell online is not being received warmly by the western markets.

Barra also said that they plan to release a smart phone in the USA market and it will be "disruptive."

The Xiaomi Mi Box can be purchased from Walmart.
